Default timing and pinging

set timing for 1st time on this mustang. it was set at 0 degrees! i know to disconnect the spount connecter, stock is 10*, i went up to 14*. what a difference! my question is, how can i be sure there is no pinging? i just assume that it would only ping under load. i figure under load, it would sound like marbles in the engine! what does pinging sound like, can u hear it at idle, and how to best listen for it?
