Post tranny whine...

Been hearing it for about 4 months now...I never noticed it until a friend mentioned it (maybe I just never heard it before)
Anywho, I hear a whine from the tranny only when it's under low rpm load and when I am going slow (cars too loud to hear it otherwise) You know the sound you tranny makes when you try to downshift and your going too fast? thats what it sounds like but not as loud..

any ideas? it shifts fine and smooth...doesn't feel any different...

Hey,
All I can tell you is that I've been hearing the same thing ever since I installed my Pro 5.0 shifter and I've heard that it happens with every aftermarket shifter.

If its a whine than its probably your throwout bearing, Clutch action may be affected a little but the shifting will feel fine.

I dont know, i had a whine for a about 1/2 a year, now it turned into a (whining (clicking) noise, and it's not my throwout cuz i had that replaced along with a new clutch? it's not good, it may last a while, but start saving money, it could be ready to go clank!@$@%

well, I am not alone on this.
Throwout bearing is good, matter of fact, my friend said he never heard it until I put the king cobra clutch in.

I have heard the throwout for that clutch makes noise, but it is normal...hmmm

Well throwout bearings have more of a (squeal) from my friends experience, but im not saying your wrong, does it howl on deceleration at low speeds? does it whine in every gear? my car lasted many hard runs while it whined, but finally sounds like it's gonna break not good

I got the same whine in 2nd, and a lot in 3rd, under same load conditions, AFTER I installed my MAC shifter...

And, since then, I've had a new clutch installed and T-5 rebuild..

So, I'd have to narrow it down to the shifter.. (just don't understand why!)

It could also be the head bearing located on the imput shaft in the tranny. It is famous for starving for fluid by the design on the T-5. If you already had a aftermarket shifter in the car and it didn't start right after the clutch install I would lean towards that.

Rick is correct. The input shaft will be the source of the whine in about 89% of all cases of this low RPM tranny whine. The noise that a throwout bearing would make is a high shrill squeal, similar to running your fingernails down a chalkboard. I would not worry about the noise. If you did not properly prepare the tranny cover/ boot when installing the shifter, you will experience more of the tranny noise escaping up and into the cabin of the car. Thus the increase in the numbers of Tranny Whines by people whom have recently installed shifters.

There is a rubber noise dampener that is on a stock shifter, when I put my tri-Ax in. In order to put it in the lowest position you had to remove the noise dampener. The instruction said that you would hear alot more tranny noise if you didn't replace the noise dampener.

I was told it was just my shifter when I noticed this after installing a Pro 5.0. Shortly after that my tranny went south on me.
