If i were you i'd take it to a shop and have them diagnose what the problem is, it may be a fairly simple repair like a solenoid which wouldn't cost too much, a transmission overhaul costs usually between $1500 to $2500 depending and a replacement (remanufactured) $2500-$3500 or you could have a used transmission put in, probably as low as $1000-$1500.
You never know, there might even just be a damaged wire or something simple that won't cost that much (relatively). Keep us posted
