Gear VS Chip
A Friend of mine have a 1996 mustang 4.6 with a 2.73 (But it's going to change http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif).
He's not sure about which of these two modifications. 1 - The gear (3.08, 3.27)(At ford's dealer 500 for the gear and 4 hours of labor) 2- The chip from Ford's Motorsport (500$ too and he don't tell me for the labor. Is this easy to replace?? Can i do it for him?) The clerk at Ford dealer's tell him that about the chip. He can reach 240 horse power with 305 pounds of torque. Is this true? with no others modifications on the car? ------------------ http://www.white-gt.com/gif_anim/mirror.gif 88 GT, K&N, Home Made Ram Air, Convertible Engine Mount, Dynomax Super Turbo, 180° thermostat, Energy sway bar bushings, Strut tower brace. *** And Risen from the dead *** My GT My Web Page [This message has been edited by White GT (edited 01-28-2001).] |
DO THE GEARS FOR GODSAKES!!!
3.73's!!!! DO NOT GO LOWER THAN 3.73!!! Believe me the 4.6 GT's need 3.73's and if it's an Auto they need 4.10's!!!!! ------------------ 2000 GT Conv. 5speed Triple Black Current Mods: K&N, Mobile 1, MagnaPack Cat-Back, Steeda Tri-Ax, GW Subframes, 3.73's. ET: 14.26@98.9 (K&N, Mobile1, Tri-ax) |
Do 3:73's, no less. And for the love of god do not pay that kind of price for gears and the install. Get a mustang magazine and you find gears from $160-200. $500??? Thats absurd!! There is a place here in PA that installs FRPP 3:73's for $298. If he has the dealership do it he's looking at $800+!!!!
A chip will not give you anything on a stock car. It will be a waste of money for him. even w/ a few bolt on's, its still not a good choice unless its custom burned for his specific vehicle. ------------------ 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L: Black w/ grey leather Ram Air w/ K&N, FMS U/D pulleys, FMS 9mm wires, Dynomax exhaust. ditto on the 3.73's,don't go to ford

Thanks VERY MUCH for the help. You're right. They're a lot of good Part store other than Ford's. Thanks too for the gear ratio. I was not sure about this too.
For the 3.73. He probably needs to change the gear on the speedometer cable. Can you tell me which one he must get (How many teeth and what color the gear is supposed to be)? http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...d/confused.gif Thanks Marc ------------------ <IMG SRC="http://www.white-gt.com/gif_anim/mirror.gif"> 88 GT, K&N, Home Made Ram Air, Convertible Engine Mount, Dynomax Super Turbo, 180° thermostat, Energy sway bar bushings, Strut tower brace. *** And Risen from the dead *** My GT My Web Page [This message has been edited by White GT (edited 01-29-2001).] |
