Antifreeze in my oil, Again!

This is the 2nd time this has happened to me, i don't understand it? I put on my Explorer intake on this weekend and now the oil level just keeps on rising and water is coming out the exhaust? Last time this happened I had a blown head gasket.

I just don't understand why this happened, I used RTV around the water jackets and tighten the intake down good. WTF!

Only time that has happened for me is blown head gaskets. I had one blow. About a month later the other blew. Sorry I can not be more help/.

Can someone lead me in the right direction? I don't think its the lower intake but I don't understand how that could cause a blown head gasket?

Stang_ROTY 02-27-2002 07:25 PM

Has the engine been getting hot??

PKRWUD 02-27-2002 07:37 PM

Did you have the heads surfaced after blowing the first gasket? A blown head gasket often involves a head whos surface is slightly warped. If that isn't corrected, it will continue to blow gaskets.

Take care,

The engine hasn't been getting hot.

I rebuilt the motor after the first blown head gasket. Decked the block and used different heads.

I still don't understand how putting an intake on can cause this problem?

5ohCOUPE 02-27-2002 08:27 PM

Ive only seen this once, but my friend tightened his intake so much that it pulled the heads up a little and his head gaskets started to leak. Like i said This is very unlikely because you really gotta crank down on the intake to do that !!!!!!!!! I still cant believe that he did that but it actually happend.

poopstang 02-27-2002 08:55 PM

Is there a way that I can find out what side it is?

PKRWUD 02-27-2002 11:41 PM

I would do a compression check first to rule out a head gasket problem. If it is the manifold, it doesn't matter which side it is, the whole lower will have to be removed. Then you should be able to identify where the problem was. It's possible that the manifold is cracked, too.

Take care,
-Chris

with water coming out of the exhaust I think it's a head gasket

I'm gonna pressure test the coolant system and compression test it tom.

I hate this crap all i did was change the intake, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stanger8172 02-28-2002 12:07 AM

just for my .02 -->my bud who built my motor had to redo the lower intake gasket after my oil had antifreeze in it and it ran like SH*T to!

isn't a little water supposed to come out of the tailpipes in the exhaust? where in the exhaust is the water coming out?

PKRWUD 02-28-2002 12:22 AM

Water is the chemical result from a perfectly running engine, after passing through the cats. Puddles under your exhaust tips is normal when cold. However, after the engine warms up, the heat in the pipes evaporates it all. If you are still seeing puddles under the exhaust tips after the engine has been running for 30 minutes, there may be a problem.

Pressure test your cooling system just before doing the compression test, with the spark plugs removed. If water is getting into a cylinder, you will see it get spit out of the spark plug hole when you are cranking the engine for the compression test.

Take care,
-Chris

I believe it because it happened to me. I blew 3 sets of head gaskets in one month and was about to torch my car when I herd of this problem. The last time i put it together I only torqued the intake down to 6ftlbs. Now it works great.

I believe it, too. The first 302 I rebuilt, I was putting an Edelbrock Performer manifold on. Well...me being naive, reading the torque specs as 18-22ft.lbs., I thought, "well, if 22 is good, then 35 must be better!" WRONG-O!!! The coolant just freakin' sprayed into the valley. I blamed the Evil RTV god for a long time, then I found out, oops, you can't torque the intake all that tight after all. Live and learn. I've found "wrist tight" to be adequate. I know, that's about as UNscientific and INconsistent as it gets, however I haven't had a single failure since using this method. Mebbe I have a torque wrench built into my arms, I dunno. Okay, me stop ramblin'. ;)

So you guys are saying it could be my lower intake? I tighten it down to 25 ft. lbs, I guess thats too much?

Well I'm gonna test it today, so we'll see what happens.
