Is MAF Conversion worth it?

I have an 88LX Speed density ( it currently has a 302 non-HO from a t-bird) But I am putting in a 302 HO from a 93GT,it is pretty much stock, is it worth it to convert to mass air and put bigger injectors and fuel pump, or is it a waste of money? I plan to put on a Gt40 intake and possibly roller rockers, I run 3.55 gears and haev a K&N panel filter. Other than that probably won't be doing too myuch more to it. what about putting in a cold air induction kit and leaving it speed density? Let me know what you all think!

If you get more HP out of it, it's always worth it :D

Are you getting the engine complete with computer and all? I believe the computers out of the 89 and up are different because of the speed density to mass air change. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to give false info.

With your mild mods you would lose HP with mass air.

You can mod the hell out of speed density and get good results.

PM me if you have any specific questions.

Computer

I am getting a computer from a 93 GT coming with the motor.

if you dont plan on going with a big cam (bigger than an E-cam) or boost, you'll be faster if you stay speed density.

Drew,

You'll get the computer if I let you have it.

speed-density mods.

Question is how do you modify speed-density? Other than adjusting fuel pressure and timing .
I don't see anyone talking about how it's done. No-one selling meters or anything for speed-density.

Talk to 88WorkCar, he's your man when it comes to SD.

No one is selling meters, because SD doesn't use a meter.

Change the pump, only because yours is 14 years old, a 155lph will be fine. The Cobra is cheaper than a GT-40, that and a 65mm TB will be good also. The injectors, you may want those proffesionally cleaned, but do not go bigger. I have used 19lbs up to 380hp, you will hear that that is a no-no but it workered flawlessly for me for over too years. Yet it would not accept the 24lb. 3.55s are good, I prefer a little more, but that is a choice thing. It will be hard to get to the twelve's without quite a bit more power, with 3.55s. The rockers are ok also, I have a set in the shed, yet to put them on this motor. Don't look for any gains from them, just piece of mind that they are better is worth putting them on. You can put a B or E cam, A WR1087, CC258, or any thing close to those profiles with out a doubt. Even heads like Edelbroc, POWERHEADS, Winsor jrs, ect... I am not sure about the really big boys, but these CAN get you to 11s. Good luck keep in touch.

The speed density cars are indeed faster in stock form. The stock MAF is restrictive, and the 87 and 88 motors also had a more agressive stock cam ( people forget that in comparisons)

If you upgrade to a larger MAF, you already have a Mass air computer, and it should run just fine that way. The mass air cars are easier to tune, and change calibrations for different injector sizes. Also automatically adjusts for intake, head or exhaust changes. The SD guys have come pretty far, but it involves more tricks and work than it seems. To keep the car SD would involve finding a wire harness ( if it was changed) and computer from a HO SD motor, since you mentioned you have a non HO motor in there. Seems easier to go to MAF in your case

That's my 0.02

I have the understanding that with any SD or MAF car, you wan to move the IAC sensor out of the number 5 runner and put it in the intake tube some where. I have pulled quite a few out of stangs and they are all crudded up by oil residue from the PVC system. I know they made this change on the 94-95 's on up. Anyone have any performance gains if any from this ?

88workcar 12-15-2002 07:12 PM

The only gain from it is the fact that it stays clean. MMFF did a test on the dyno. No Gain. I did it, no gain, stays clean
