Who has done heads/cam swap?
Wanna help me out? I'm looking at getting some assembled AFR 165's, E-cam, and appropriate pushrods/lifters. I'll get the heads and pushrods ('standard length' 7.200") from AFR. Any suggestions on lifters (i don't think i can go wrong here)?
Once i get all this stuff, what do i do? Anyone want to give me a detailed explaination? I just recently replaced my water pump, and previously replaced the rear control arms, shocks and springs all around. Can i do this? |
Adding a couple things, i'm gonna get a new FRPP timing set as well.
Couple more questions. Do i need new head bolts or can i re-use my stockers? Finally, i'm trying to do the minimum that i need to to do this head/cam swap, am i gonna need some new injectors/fuel pump (no other engine mods, see below), and if i do, should i get 30lb and 190lph or 24lb and 155lph as i will be doing exh. and intake at a later time. |
You really should replace your intake, throttle-body and headers at the same time (hell, you're gonna have everything apart anyway). If you're going to run this combo with the stock intake, t-body and headers you'll never make the kind of power you'd like to see.
155lph pump and 24lb injectors will be fine. |
and stock head bolts will work, but why not go with some better ones while you are already in there? could even go to the studs.
i agree about replacing the intake and throttle body, but i also want to say that the heads are the biggest bottleneck and if you cant afford to do the others right now, replacing the heads and cam will still be a good move. might not get full potential but its easier to swap intakes later than it would be to do it vice versa. my opinion. stock heads bolts work fine, save your money in this area.
Fors stock roller lifters are fine also. |

I'd definately go with some ARP head bolts or studs. The stock ones are prone to stretching. If you're going to spend that much money on nice heads like that don't go cheap on anything that is going to be used on them.
I'd go ahead and do the head/cam swap and worry about the intake later. One thing you can do though is port match the lower intake to the heads. That'll help some. Anyway, you should definately be able to feel a noticable difference in power. ------------------ Too much to list. I'll get some new head bolts, and i'm buying the heads assembled from AFR, so they will have RR's. I'll grab some new lifters while i'm at it. Now what about the new injectors....do i need to get them now, or can i wait till i do the intake? |
I think for now you can get away with the 19# injectors, but when you do the intake it would be best to get 24# injectors and a mass air meter. I think the AFR's are available in both stud and pedastal mount RR, get the stud mount. Carlise is about 45mins north of me.

Cool! tell me if your ever coming down here, and i'll talk to you if i go up there some time!
Now, anyone want to tell me how to install all this stuff (heads and cam), or if i can do it. As i said before, i've done water pump, rear upper and lowers, and springs and shocks all around. |
Yeah, get some new head bolts. Also Mustangs Unlimited sells Crane roller lifters for $100 a set. As for the injectors, wait. Look at my combo, stock fuel system totaly except for the fuel pressure reg., which you will need rather you stick with stock or bigger injectors. I think a good fuel pump, and reg. should work fine with your combo, untill you get a power adder.
