Rebuild AOD or swap to 5sp????

well it happened again, my tranny is starting to go. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif i brought my car to a shop which was recommended by a few people to have it looked at. they said that Aamco did a bang up job on my last rebuild. so now i'm faced with the question: do i get a built AOD by lentech, or do a 5 speed swap? i like the freedom of not having to shift when in traffic and such, but i know a stick will be more fun and net better times. i think i saw a ad in muscle mustangs for a kit to do the swap for about $1600. or would it be worth it to get a lentech with a 3200 stall converter? any thoughts would be great!!!

A well built AOD will handle your power just find, with room for expansion. If you do get it rebuilt, get a custom stall converter, and some better gearing (3.73), you won't be much slower than if you had a manual.

i did the T-5 swap for a grand total of about $200, which is MUCH less than any AOD rebuild, i found a cheap used T-5 and a few other cheap parts and bought a new clutch kit/cable/pilot bearing
along with selling my AOD with about 5000 miles on a rebuild for $425

i also did all the work myself with the help of a friend who also had access to a lift (VERY nice)

although not HAVING to change gears is nice, but being able to is all the fun, i'd do the swap if i were you, im really glad i did

Why settle for a 5 speed? Get a T56! It's only money.

the T56 is a 6 speed tranny with an overdrive geared to where you could have 4.30 gears and still be able to cruise on the highway at a reasonable RPM http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif
i'm not sure exactly what is involved but i've heard its really pricey, the tranny itself is about $3000

now for the kit, www.stangparts.com has them for about $1600 with a used T-5
you can piece one together MUCH cheaper than that if you know what you need

Talk with Len at Lentech before you do anything. There's absolutely no comparison between a Lentech and your run-of-the-mill rebuilds.
