He's right your gears should
NOT be whining, if they are they are set to tight and will wear out. I would get you car back to the shop as soon as you can so they will stand behind their work.
As far as getting your speedo right what
NOS_Notch was eluding to was some times it is possible that you need to change the gear that is in the tailshaft of the tranny, I am running a red ford gear on the speedo cable with (I believe) a 6 tooth yellow gear in the tailshaft. I am swapping to 4:30 gears and there isn't correct combo out to make the speedo correct.
