Yes, with most aftermarket LCAs you don't need the dampners. I have Megabite JRs and removed mine a long time ago. I am running 17x8 99+ GT wheels w/245/40s on my 1985 with no rubbing issues in the rear.
As far as the self-adjusters go, I would back them off until you don't hear the shoes rubbing and adjust them by braking in reverse a few times as suggested. I am running 17x8 99+ GT wheels w/245/40s on my 1985 with no rubbing issues in the rear.
