Battery in trunk?
I had missed the fact that the battery was in the rear. What I had to do to get good starting performance with the battery in the trunk was to run a #2 gauge ground cable directly from the ground terminal of the battery to the bolt holding the starter motor in place. I could not get good performance from a chassis gound from the battery and a chassis ground to the engine block. This could be your problem. My experience with the chassis ground was just slow cranking, especially when hot. I do have ground connections from the engine block to the chassis so that everything else will still work off of a chassis ground.
