If the guy at the machine shop is a nice guy they will probably take a look at the block w/o heads and could give you a decent estimate of what could be wrong and how much, but don't think it is written in stone. Sourcing a 5.0 engine from maybe a swap meet and building it up a little before switching them out. Could be cheapest way and most convienent.
