I removed the heads today. The #5 piston was as clean as a whistle. Then I noticed something odd. There were two different types of head gaskets on there. One was a Fel-Pro gasket and the other one is...well...I don't know what kind it is.
I'm getting th idea that at some point in this engine's history, that a head gasket blew before. Other than that, everything "looks" good. The pistons are not coated with heavy carbon nor are the valves in the heads. I think I am going to go ahead and take the engine out because I need to replace the oil pan gasket and looks almost impossible to do with the engine in. It looks like my '82 is going to be down for awhile I'll probably be posting lots of threads for input on ideas, tips etc. as go through this long project.
