Question aod tranny pan removal

i have a 89 lx convertible and i am not a "experienced" mechanic so be gentle! >

i tried to change my tranny fluid the other day but i could not get the front bolts off the pan because there is a overlapping piece of metal. i think, but do not know for sure, that it is part of the chassis bracing(?)

anyone have an idea of my next step?

do i try to remove the piece and hope i don't get over my head or do i need some "special" tool other than knowledge.

thanx
