Get the correct speedo gear. I got mine from Livernois for like $20. I don't know what teeth you need for the 3.73's. But all you have to do is pull the cable from the tranny, pull the clip off, change the gears, put the clip back on, and put your cable back in the tranny.
***Did some checking, it is a 20-22 tooth gear you need, depending on your tire size.

I hate to be a P I T A but does anyone have a pic of where the gear is located or pics of an install and thanks for that webpage but it looks like a I need a 23tooth gear and on the site it says "The 23 tooth driven gears are notorious at being short lived" if this is the case i'll just live with my speedo being off.

You need the red 21 tooth gear, part #C4OZ-17271-A.

They will actually keep working decently even when half the teeth are stripped off. My speedo was reading perfectly and when I pulled the gear out, it was ripped apart with every other tooth missing.
The gear is so easy to install that there's no point living with a miscalibrated speedo. The gear is on the driver's side of the transmission tailshaft just forward of the driveshaft yoke. You'll see a grey cable going into the back of a sleeve. It might also have an electrical connector. The sleeve is held in by a single bolt. Pull the bolt and the sleeve slides out. You will see the gear on the end. Pull out the cotter pin at the gear's base, switch gears and put it back in. 10-15 minutes tops. Have fun!

I have 3:55's, 16" tires, and I use the white (23) and it is pretty much right. Mine was chewed up too when I replaced it. The old one was in there for about 8 years. It is really easy to change, but you do have to pull kind of hard to get it out.
Check this place out: http://www.50resto.com/ In search type in Speedometer gear. Brad

Where is that part # from I ran it on jegs, summit, and 50resto with no luck.
Anyways I found the 21tooth gear on 50resto and it says its for 3:73's 1983-1989 5spd, and its the red one for $7.95 so is that it?

That part number is the Ford number. But it sounds like you found one that will work.

Your going to have to use, at least, a 23 tooth (white) with your combination. This is the largest so it will still be off a little, but it is the closest.
The 1983-89 with T5 transmission used a 7 tooth drive gear vs the 1990-95 used a 8 tooth drive gear. That's the reason a 21 tooth with 3:73 will work for the 1983-89. Here is a chart so you can see: http://www.gatineaumustang.com/FTspeedogears.htm Brad

I'm not aware of any 24 tooth gears, but if you could find one, that's what you'd really need.

Nope, no 24-tooth gears around. When you get to that point, you've got to start thinking about swapping out the drive gear so you can get the combination of drive & driven back to a workable solution.
