Default Differential pinion seal

When replacing the pinion seal in the rear end, is it necessary to
install a new crush collar or can i just install teh new seal and torque
the pinion nut to spec?

Default Re: Differential pinion seal

Spec being what? Pinion nut torque is specified as a running torque on the pinion gear, sans the differential and ring gear. If you've got it this far apart, why not just install a new crush collar in the process.

I've seen people do this, usually with one of two results: (1) pinion nut eventually backs off and the gear set is trashed or (2) too much bearing preload results in the bearings burning up in a hundred or so miles.

Even the factory service CDs call for the installation of a new crush collar.

No way I'd pass up using a new crush sleeve.
