I don't know the answers, but I will find out soon. I live near Sacramento in California, and I know of a shop that could help you out. I am currently putting a 429/505 stroker into a 1970 Mach 1, and they are helping me out a lot with not only parts, but advice and info as well. The name of the shop is Hamilton/Clark Motorsports, but I don't know if they have a website or anything. I am getting together all of the money I need for the motor next week, and as I go along, they will help me with the same knowledge that you need. I will tell you whatever I find out, but I will also leave the phone number in case you want to call.
(916)643-2010, and ask for Robert or Cole. Cole is the one who knows the most about big blocks - he had the fastest street rod in California for about three years, I think. Hope I helped a little.
