Me and my dad just tore apart this old gmc truck i used to have (now my cousins) and we put a small block 400 in it, but the original 305, we took it apart b/c it ws making a clunking noise, it had spun quite a few rods and wore the crank out so bad the pistons were slapping the heads. I hope yours isnt that bad. You said it did this after removing the heads ,sounds like your going to have to take the short block apart to inspect it.
