Default need advice on axle noise

What parts in the rear end would cause my axle to whine and have some play from power on to power off? I am going to swap the gears to 3.55 anyway, but do I need to rebuild or replace the diff as well? I plan to replace the differential and ring and pinion bearings. Rebuilding the posi looks pretty straight forward but if the spiders are worn would that leave me with the noise? Any help would be appreciated.
