I've never heard of checking the oil as part of the inspection, and I've lived in MA and NY, both of wich are pretty strict... though it's possible it's a step they just ignore since it's just silly.

You should just change you oil anyway if it's dirty... that's just good maintenance... and as for 50 weight... I dont think it's BAD... but it's thicker.. depends on where you live.. if it's hot all year round then it's probably not bad... but multiweight oils are good in cold climates, it keeps the oil thin so when you start up it can move around quick and then thickens up when it gets hot. I used to run 70w in my first car in highschool cause the engine was so worn it wouldnt keep oil pressure... but I tell ya.. it worked wonders.. that oil light didnt go on anymore ...
