It took me a long time to figure out how to tighten (hydraulic) rocker arms... hopefully you didn't do the same thing that I did when I first started getting into playing with engines... if you can't spin the pushrods on valves that are closed, after running the motor, you've got them too tight.

Something that no one mentioned... how's your timing and advance working? If you're getting detonation, that could be your problem.
