My home made cold air/ram air outfit is similar to what you describe. It has 2 4" ducts coming in from behind the grille between the headlights and the radiator mounted in the radiator support.

My carburetor is surrounded by an enclosure made from a 33 gal drum that encloses a 3"X14" K&N filter.

I think this thing lowers my ET by maybe .1 or so at the track.
