New Cam going in, which timing chain? Stock replacement?
I'm getting ready to install my new Crane Compucam 2031, I have 128k on the motor and if course I'm going to replace the stock timing chain, will a stock replacement work? Also should I just install it straight up? Also is there anything else that I should go ahead and replace while doing the job? Thanks

I know that, that one will work but will a stock replacement one work? Thanks for the input.

I'm sure the stock one would work, but why skimp? It's probably not much less than the double roller.

93CobraR - You will really like the 2031. It has a pretty mean idle, really kicks in at 3K, and pulls like a mofo clear to 6K. Mine idles around 750 or so and sounds great. When I put it in I used the FRPP double roller (made by Cloyes). Cheap insurance if you ask me. A standard replacement will work though. I installed mine straight up. You could retard it 4* and gain about 10hp up top, but you will lose the same down low. You could replace lifters since yours have 128k on them, but the stockers should work as long as it is running fine now. I reused mine, but only had 80k on them. I also put a new water pump on mine when I had everyhting apart.

Hey 93CobraR, you helped me out on wheels not too long ago, maybe I can help you out here. I also have the FMS double roller and it works great. I installed it straight up. This is the best way for a street driven N/A car.
Make sure you install it straight up, a buddy of mine tried to rush and put his car together and he put the timing chain (Edlebrock multi-index) on advanced. The exhaust valve kept hitting the piston, I couldn't figure out why. I told him that if the valve timing is off the valves would hit the pistons. He swore that it was straight up, but with that dumb look in his eyes I didn't think he knew that when I said straight up. Well, he put it together before I got there and he threw away the box and I didn't know if it was a multi-index chain or not. I finally figured it out and it runs great now. BTW, I have the Chrome Cobra R rims (17x9) on my car and it looks sweet. I will post pictures sometime soon. |

Yeah, thanks. Where did you end up getting your rims from? I planned on installing it straight up. Also what about the cam pin?

I bought my rims from a Belle Tire that my buddy works at.
What did you want to know about the pin? |

My cam came with 2 different pins that go in the end. A long one and a short one, which ones do I use? Thanks

My cam only came with one pin. Measure the approximate length and I will measure the length of the pin in my E cam fresh in the box in my room. It might depend on how deep the recess on the cam is, and how thick the timing chain is (dual roller vs. single). I am not for sure though. Maybe someone else can chime in and let us know for sure.

I put a 2031 in about 4 months ago. Somewhere in the instructions it tells you which pin to use, I can't remember where. I think I used the short one - I don't think the long pin will fit when you try to put the gear back on.

93CobraR - Sorry for the long delay, haven't checked this site for a while. I used the stock pushrods. I get quite a bit of valvetrain noise though, but I think it is from the noisy 1.7 rockers and using stock pushrods with my P heads that have been milled .030. I probably shoulda got a new length, but it wouldn't have been hardly any difference. I should just re-torque the rockers and it would probably fix it. As for the cam pin, I am not sure which one we used.
