I'm sorry you had to take the brunt of that sweetheart.
Men don't care who or what is "in the way" when they are having a bad day. They will beat up on anything around them, cars, walls small woodland creatures. Unfortunatly, most of the time guys have a bad day and come home to a woman. I have an 80lb heavy bag and a pair of shorts in my garage. There are days I don't go in the house until I've used them both. That way I can leave some of my anger (one of the four emotions men understand) out there and be a little bit nicer. The other part of the problem is that men are supposed to be strong. When things go wrong for us we have to deal with it. That's our job. More often than not, it makes us seem grumpy to those around us. The guys that can comminicate, there is usually something wrong with them.
