To avoid that wonderful gas shower:

1) Don't attempt to remove fuel filter directly after shutting off the car-- allow some pressure to drop.

2) Use a rag and wrap the filter, then get a pliers and unclamp the clamps (most likely those difficult, non-screw tightening metal clamps).
