This will sound funny, but the best way to isolate a noise coming from an engine is to take a sold stick or metal pole about 2 or 3 feet long and touch one end to each component and the other to your ear... sounds weird and looks even weirder, but it helps in isolating noises. You hear exactly what's going on with the interior of that component. Just be very careful with moving parts when you do this. try it, you'll like it!!
