6 inches past the tailhousing and 'just behind the front u-joint' should be 1 in the same. Or thereabouts. Give yourself another inch. If you get the loop too close, it will be a pita to get the trans in. In my buddies 88 which was set up for a glide, we have to pick the back of the trans up and put it through the loop, then push the trans forward in to the bellhousing.
