Back in the day.....they use to make Clutch-flites. They were Torqueflites with a manual clutch set up adapted to the front, where the convertor would be. They'd use the clutch to get it off the line and then just shift the automatic.

My grand pa had a '48 Dodge. It had a standard shift 3 speed with a clutch and a torque convertor. Chrysler called it "Fluid Drive". The idea was that you would use the clutch to shift gears but use the torque convertor to idle in 1st with the clutch out, then start out and depress the clutch to shift.

Grand pa used to just leave it in 2nd gear and use it as one speed automatic around town. Wasn't real peppy though, the way I remember it as an 8 year old.
