Last year I re-covered my seats(two buckets and standard rear) over a weekend and saved a ton of money. I am not that mechanical of a person, but it was actually a fairly straightforward procedure. The only cost to me (aside from a little blood, sweat, and tears) was in the materials. Hog rings, upholstery, and seat buns cost me less than $250. Maybe I was just lucky, but I think the seats came out great and I saved hundreds in trim shop fees. So to make a long story short, depending on what type of restoration you are doing (daily driver, concours, etc., you might be able to shave the cost down quite a bit by doing some stuff yourself.
