Post Planning Ahead. Need Advice on Next Rod to Build!

I'm trying to decide what my next Muscle car should be. I plan on starting in about 5 years, give or take a year. I'm trying to decide on what to build up. I have a stout 289 sitting in my garage I built up, and quite a few FE parts.

I'm debating a several cars to keep and eye out for to make into a PURE 100% STREET TERROR. My 64 1/2 Diane can hold her own on the streets, and my 2000 GT Tina can give out a mean a$$ Whoppin (I'm no where near done with her yet. Gears, intake manifold, and when the warranty expires.....Forced induction.)

But I'm lookin to build something comparable to the THUNDERBOLT, to be my Fast occasional cruise night/street racing car.

I know of a few early 60's falcons that are cheap and would make awesome light weight Terrors with a well built cammin, rockin, firebreathing 289. Or building my own Thunderbolt/64 fairlane with a 390 instead of a 427.

Then I look at my friend Eric's 67 Fairlane, and get goose bumps and ahhhh....ummmmmmm.... Yeah, anyway that car gets my blood pumping.

Or possibly trying to find either a 58-60 T-Bird with a 460 385 series bigblock.

I have so many ideas, and sketches done with engine and tranny plans. Its hard to pick.

It would probably be cheapest to go with the Falcon and a rip roaring small block, but nothing feels like a thumpin BigBlock.

Dangit.....ARGHHHHHHH To many cool ideas, to little money and time. I need to own a Junkyard or something..

I would Rod my 64 1/2 Jolene (6 cyl) but its a real early production car, and I want to restore that one to show car quality, that will be when I'm in my mid 30's probably.

2000 Perf Red Mustang GT. 5spd. BBK Underdrive pulleys, Flotech off-road H pipe. Hurst T-Handle, 40 series Flowmasters, Steeda Tri-Ax
64 1/2 red 6cyl coupe.

Yo Merc, nice to see you are feeling better! As far as cars go, do the Thunderbolt! I've wanted one of those forever. Nothing beats the nostalgia stuff. Those Fairlanes are disappearing, every time there's one in the paper, by the time I call it's gone. 61 Ford Starliner looks cool too. I saw one at Palmdale once, it was white with the teardrop scoop and had a 580ci big block ford! Ran wheels up low 10 second E.t.'s. Every one has a mustang, and every one has new stuff, wheels, instruments carburetors. I'd go Nostalgia. Better yet, run a straight axle 64 Falcon with a Hilborn fuel injected 289 with 4spd! How cool would that be pulling up to your burger hangout in that?

Cool idea Smoked Chevy, but the price of some of those Nostalgic pieces is astronmical.

I thought about doing a 63/64 Comet up like a Thunderbolt, there based on the same Chassis.

Ever built a sleeper? If not knows the time. Build something that noone will suspect. stock rims, quiet exhaust, a granny mobile. Pull up to the light and smoke some *** . I always wanted a 65 Firlane 2dr. hardtop with the biggest f'n motor I could possible cram in it. Quiet exhaust and stock rims. If you dont want the nostalgia look go with a RANGER like I am, mid 80's model reg. cab short bed. SLEEPER, the rice guys really hate to get beat but they get plum angry when it's by a truck.

My friend Tim C has a mid 80's Ranger, I think its either a 83 or 84 4cyl. He's got a 351 Windsor he's gonna build up and shoe horn into that baby.

My old Mustang Diane is sort of a sleeper. Its not really all that quite, but it doesnt sound like a rip roaring beast. Shes got stock hub caps, White wall tires and stock body with the exception of the exhaust exiting throught the rear valance panel like the 65-66 GT's did.

Check out the pics of her on Users rides and tell me if she looks like a sleeper.

I already have cars that can hang with the whole Pony Car crowd, like Camaro Z28's and Trans Ams, now I'm setting my sights for higher prey, like the Vettes, and more exotic cars.

I'm looking to make a Eleven second car, I know thats not blindingly fast, but fast enough to kick over 95% of whats out theres butt. So far, the Falcon seems like the best and cheapest way to go. There was a 62 falcon here for sale for 500$ that was 100%straight and rust free, and it ran and drove. Now with a built up 289 or 351, in that light a$$ car should cook some pavement. I'd probably have to go with a 351 Windsor to reach my 11 second goals if I want to do it without forced induction and Nitrous ("nos" if you talk like the Fast and Furious).

This is how I want people to react to my next car.

Sitting at the light in his Green Z28, confident that his LS-1 can take on anything that pulls up next to him, Bob looks around for any competitors.

Nothing.

Off in the distance Thunder can be heard. Dissapointed by the lack of races, bob watches the light and waits for its change.
"Man theres gotta be some one out there."

He hears a rumble of the sky closer this time. Wait a minute, thats not thunder. His car begans to hum with reverbarance. Lookinng up in his rearview mirror, a set of round head lights approaches.

"What the He**, thats not thunder at all."

His heart rythm is thrown of beat as red early 60's Ford pulls along side him. The fumes of unburnt gas pouring out the side pipes begins to make him dizzy. With every unmuffled burn from a cylinder comes a window shaking boom out of the exhaust.

Mechanical lifters can be heard ticking as they work to open the valves.

Sweat begins to trickle from Bobs brow, he realizes hes staring at the beast and focus on the light. Heart stammering, he feels his arm go numb, he'd had such a death grip on the shifter knob.

Windows shake and teeth rattle as the guy (Damien, aka Mercury) revs the motor to keep it from loading up and stalling.

Man, why me, why couldnt it be a Mustang, or LS-1, or hell even a Intergra. Anthing Else but this monster thought Bob.

Now he looks around for a way out. With no cars behind him, he puts it into reverse and pulls into the left turning lane to escape.

Thats not my best writing, infact it rather sucks, but I'm in a hurry. Thats how I want someone to feel when I pull up next to them in my next rod. hehehehhehehehehehe

I'd go for the sleeper.

Sitting at the light in his green LS1, wishing there were more races
in this one-horse town, bob ponders the meaning of life. off in
the distance thunder cannot be heard.

all of the sudden an early-80's LX notch screeches to the line
next to him. the thing is shaking, and making a bunch of noise.
bob figures it has a bad idle and bad muffler, pays it no mind.
a single exhaust pipe pokes down from the driver's side of the
bumper, denoting this as a four cylinder mustang. the window
above the primered door rolls down. some dorky looking
teenager looks over, and with an idiotic grin asks:

"Hey. wanna race?"

Bob can hardly control his laughter at this absurd proposition. this
poor kids weak carbed four-cylinder is no match for the mighty fuel
injected 350. he obliges, figuring the kid could use a good
*** -whoopin'. he revs.

the opposite light changes to yellow. bob stages.

their lights go green, and bob nails it.

apparently the dork nailed it too, and blows by bob on two wheels.
suddenly made humble, bob takes the first left.

I thought that was a good story. I would go with the falcon like a 64. Those are just my faviorite and I have always wanted one. Put a 347 in it though. U can tell everyone it is just a 289. The 302 and 289 are hard to tell apart just by looking at the motor siting in the car. That is what i would do anyway. What kinda of fe parts u got laying around anyway.

My FE parts include Several Intakes, both two barrel and 4 barrel. Heads, I'm not sure what kind they are, Hi-Po, or just regular. Guess I could drag them out of storage and take a look. I've been meaning to.

The heads have some large ports and valves, Larger than the other 390's I've seen, with the exception of my Friends 67 Fairlanes 390. I'm going to have to check.

PG KELLY...Are you saying I'm a dork man? I'm not the sleeper kinda guy, hey I love RED, that should of gave that away. I'm looking to do something from teh late 50's early to mid 60's. Something diffrent.

69 FastBack...I like the 64 styling better also, but I think the Innocent look of the pre 64 Falcons would make it diffrent. I've never seen any pre 64 built up Falcons. I'm still debating on the Falcon, or Comet, or 64/65 Fairlane (If I did a Fairlane, it would have to be a ThunderBolt like car...FE..)

I guess it will come down to what ever I can find for the best price, in teh best shape.

Thumbs up

My 94 Tripple Black Cobra i will be building while at school will be the loud, intimidating, dephening, monster in my garage. My sleeper will be my Grey,Volvo station wagon with a turboed 306. Tinted windows will hide the cage, and i might even take advantage of the wagon and tub it. Either way, it will be quiet and fast.

Mercury really the only difference between the 390 heads and the 428cj heads are the size of the ports and the intake and exhuast valves. Ur freind might have a set of them on his failaine and that is what u might have. Check it out and see. The 428 cj heads will fit on any 390. It is just the ports and valves are bigger other than that there is no difference. There are differences in the intake thougth really big ones. The best 428 cj intake will have a no 1 stamed on the back of it. The one i have in my garage is a no 2. Although i have replaced it with and edelbrock performer rpm wich is aluminum better than the no 1 intake. All these parts do fit on the 390 though. I would really like to hear more about ur freinds 390. I bet we are really close to the same motor.

The 390 I always talk about resides in my friends 67 Fairlane. The only way to describe that engine, and car is BAD A$$.

The car was built up along time before Eric, Tim C and I ever got our hands on it, but it sat for what seemed like years without running. We've redone just about everything to that motor, except tear down the bottom end.

This is no exageration, we raced a new WS6 with it. WE hung with him while spinning through the whole race, and my friend having to double clutch shift because of the broken Borg & beck Clutch. We later found out the Secondaries werent opening, and that the throttle linkage was so out of adjustment that the Primaries were only opening a little over 3 quarters. And a broken tach so Eric was playing it by ear on when to shift (Thats pretty damn hard to do on a car with No real exhaust).

Now since we've got the carb adjusted and secondaries working, and have the throttle linkage adjusted properly, and actually have a functioning tach in it, I bet it would easily lift the front wheels of the ground with a set of slicks on it.

My friend is delaying on getting a new clutch, and took the screw out of the secondaries, I think the car actually scares him. It needs a rollcage, and five point harrness thats for sure.
