![]() I had to follow my girlfriend back up to school(50+miles) and she went 85-90 the whole way which is like 3000-3200 for me with the 4:10's. Will this/did it hurt my engine? I know it's not good for it but is it REALLY bad for it?

![]() As long as your engine is in good running condition, I don't think you have anything to worry about. You probably don't want to make a habit of it though

![]() No problem. You said were cruising at 3k, so the engine's doing almost no work, just overcoming the forces of mechanical and aerodynamic drag. Let's put it this way, if that hurt the engine then there's probably something wrong from before.

![]() So basically the only thing I'm hurting as long as my engine is in good condition is my gas mileage huh?

![]() FivepointOH, in my '66 with the C-4 and 3.25 axle, I run 3000 at 70 mph and I do this all the time and have for 4-5 yrs. now. It won't hurt it. I do use Mobil 1 and have since 3000 miles after the engine was built. I don't thik 3000 sustained cruise will hurt anything as long as all the running gear is in top shape. Didn't over heat did it?

![]() Nah actually it seemed to stay even cooler. Go figure. A few times when I took it up to 105-110(can't let my girlfriend think her v6 stang is faster than mine hehe) it started to smell kind of funny... probably cause it was putting out a lot of exhaust I guess. Rev how far do you drive it like that? I went all the way from the beltway to College Station.

![]() I have put about, oh, 60,000 freeway miles on my 1.6L Mercury Tracer daily driver. I bought the car w/ 25,000 on the clock and it has 110,000 miles on it now. The trans will break and the body is rusting but the motor feels just as strong if not stronger than the day I bought it.
Oh yeah, for those 60,000 highway miles, my car turns 3,700 rpm @ 65mph. Long periods at this speed/rpm (like 50+ miles) do cause my car to run warmer but it doesn't overheat. In summary: Don't worry about it!!! ------------------ Jeff Kane 1990 LX Mustang ex-5.0 Coupe No engine. No transmission. Prepping car for a "big" big-block. http://hometown.aol.com/red514lx/ |

![]() Don't worry about it, I had a '94 F-350 4x4 with a 460, 4.10 gears, and 3-spd auto C-6. At 65 mph I turn about 3200 rpm's with 32" factory tires. The truck is my dad's now and with 140,000 on the clock it doesn't burn a drop of oil. I actually used to run it 70-75 everywhere I went ( I got the truck when I was 16, so you can imagine what hell the truck went through, 4-wheeling, and btw it was my hot rod too, lol). At 70 it tached like 3500 and 75 it tached like 3700 (can't really remember it has been a while). 460's don't like to rev, but this motor still runs perfect. So you have done no damage.
Oh yeah about the 50+ miles thing, I drove out to Silver Lake Sand Dunes with this truck when it had about 80,000 miles on it. Silver Lake is on the west shore of MI, and I live nearly on the east shore of MI, (@240 miles I believe from where I live). I drove at 75-80 mph and the truck never missed a beat. Although I stopped for gas before I got there, and I have dual tanks. The gas bill used to hurt, that is why I bought a Power Stroke. ![]() Yeah, one time I had lost every thing in my DOA except 1st gear. and the motor would do 10 mph for every 1000 rpm on the tach. Had to go 30 miles to work when my hoopdee had broke down. So I had it pegged at 5000 to 5500 rpm for 30 miles on the highway. Engine ran a little hot but I made it to and from work no problem. Given that the stock tach can be off as much as 800 rpm even on the low side I was still turning at 4000 rpm. BTW this made me a believer in 5w30 Mobil 1 when I pulled my valve covers on the way to removing the engine. Clean as a whistle inside the engine. given the 302's short stroke. It can rev all day long. 3500 feet per second is suppossed to be a safe amount of acceleration for a stock 2 bolt main cast everything motor. So 7000 rpm for the stock bottom end is a practical limit, but the crappy stock valve train puts the skids to that. the light springs and heavy lifters plus the rev limiter keeps it sane at 6250 or lower. no wonder these things have a rep for being tuff.

![]() Yeah I also am a believer in Mobil 1, that is what I ran in the '94 F-350 I had (10w-30). Changed the oil every 3,000 miles.

![]() Not to worry. My wife and out went out to California this past summer for vacation and drove about 1,100 miles nonstop except for gas in my stang. Usually ran between 75-90mph the whole way there. The car didn't even think twice about it, nor did I have any problems once I got to where I was going when it came time to look for a place to stay. Put over 5,000 miles on that car just that one week and the only problem I had was a seized smog pump which was no biggie. After all it is 14yrs old, something is bound to go out.
