If I had a 96-98GT, I would save as much as I could and get 99-01GT heads from a scrap yard. I hear people that have done this are making excellent power because of the better flow of the newer heads but also because of the higher compression ratio.

If you have 4-500, wait a little longer and save to get those heads used. I think you might be able to do the whole thing for under a 1000 if you do the install yourself or know someone who could help.
