OK heres what I "THINK" it might be. I removed the inner fender lining on my 88 a while back trying to lighten it up as much as possible. If you take it off. between the inner and outer fender right under where the radio antenna mounts to the fender there is a little canister of some type. I have no idea what it does or anything I just know its there. Seems like it had a couple vacuum lines and an electrical plug running to it. Maybe this will help.
