Sure. That would work. You have to make sure that the wiring is protected from anything you might run over. Also, you are going to have to ground the sending unit separately, though. In order to seal the oil in, you're going to need a thread sealant and a gasket, and either/both of those will hinder the sending unit's grounding ability. You will need to find a spot on the sending unit where there is enough room for you to drill a small hole without damaging it. next you need to tap it, and then attach a screw to it. Run a 12 gauge wire from the frame to the screw.
