I'd stay away from the automatic trannies. They are real dogs. Get a 5 speed and some 3.73 gears and you'll be able to compete with most street cars.
As far as the year, I'm biased to the 94-95 5.0 motors. Much better aftermarket support. Ricers could hang with a 96 automatic!
