Not true. What happens under these conditions is called "flaring" and is a condition that is kept under control during proper powershifting. Check out this link for more on powershifting and grannyshifting. This information seems the most consistant and comes, in part, from a MMAFF article.

A simplification of Powershifting - keep gas floored, quickly apply glancing force to the clutch (not a full depression) and move the shifter to the next gear.
