Man...I can't tell you how many times that same problem happened to me. It's not the coil...I'd be willing to put money on that. I also have an '89...and it was the FUEL PUMP RELAY...it's underneath the drivers seat and costs about $15 from AUTOZONE...I put a new one in...and it hasn't happened since then. My car did the same thing...was running fine...then just up and died on me in the middle of the road...and would crank and crank, but not fire at all...and then all of the sudden after letting it sit...it would just fire right up like nothing had ever happened....FUEL PUMP RELAY...FUEL PUMP RELAY...FUEL PUMP RELAY!!!!
