My understanding is that it is a bit of both, the forged pistons and the moly rings. Both these items increase durability but cost a little oil.
FYI, my dad's Mercedes 300E seemed to be using a bit of oil and the head of the service department showed my dad the shop manual from MB and it said that the motor is expected to use 1 quart of oil every 1000miles!
