Lx5Liter is exactly right. You can (I have) use a non-HO cam with flat tappet lifters with no problems as long as you use the non-HO firing order with the cam (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8). If you use the HO cam and roller lifters, then you'd use the HO firing order.
