01 cobra/02 gt
am looking at getting an 01 cobra but wanted to know what kind of bolt ons there are out for it? what the car runs stock and what it should run with most bolt ons? also what about the 02 gt....same questions as above. both cars assume would be 5 speed manual tranny and a coupe. i am looking at the 01 cobra and a buddy is looking at the 02 gt. both had chevys before and would rather be in a ford but not sure everything to do to the cars or how fast they can get. any advice or info would be great. thanks

With gears and drag radials the 2001 Cobra will run 12's all day. True crank hp is around the 340hp mark. Bolt on's are somewhat limited for the Cobra as exhaust, and forced induction seem to be the popular choices, along with gears, drag radials, and maybe a custom computer allowing the car to rev higher.
The Cobra is an 11sec car with traction under boost. The GT is a couple tenths slower than a Cobra from the factory, but mod for mod, the Cobra will own the GT. Factory performance should be about 13.5@105mph for the Cobra, and about 13.8@100mph for the GT. Those are good times. |

and another bolton that the cobra will need if it hooks well on the drag radials is a solid 8.8" rearend.
I've seen halfshafts in the IRS break on a 01 cobra with street tires on a lightly prepped track. If I had one, thats probably the first thing on the list to swap out.

Sure you don't mean the 99 cobra? I've never heard of street tires breaking the half shafts period. Drag radials on the 99, but I thought the 01 got a beefed up half shaft?
It's BS that you'll need a solid rear axle. Is it better for the strip, yes. You may need to upgrade the half shafts though. I see no reason to throw out one of the coolest additions onto a Mustang in 35 years so you can go down the track faster. |

Yah I'm sure exacty what it was.
I know that they won't break on street tires on the street, but on a prepped drag strip its possible. 2fastLx saw it too Quote:
But you know what opinions are like, everyone's got one I'll tell you what Unit, when I buy my Cobra in about 2.5 years, I'll swap you rearends since you seem to be a fan of the IRS

i'm serious to the point that when i do eventually get one (after college) that one of the first things out of there will be the IRS.
I am a drag racer at heart, and although the IRS is an awesome setup, its not exactly ideal for drag racing

OK, I admit that I'm confused. Which year was it tht the Cobra didn't meet it's advertized HP numbers? Wasn't there a year that we had no Cobra at all, while Ford got their act together? I do remember that those were 4.6 DOHC modular engines.

Rev, when the original set of 1999 DOHC Cobra's were released, they were advertised as 320hp. In reality, they were making about 300. The problem was a last minute intake manifold change that proved to be mismatched. The problem was corrected with a "fix" and many of the DOHC Cobra's were putting out closer to 340hp at the crank after that.
Ford killed the Cobra under the guise of making sure everything was correct partially through the production year, if I remember correctly. There was no 2000 Cobra, just the overpriced Cobra R. In 2001 they released the standard limited edition Cobra that was making more than the advertised 320hp, again about 340hp like the good "fixed" 1999 Cobra's. Ford again killed the Cobra for the 2002 model year, citing they wanted to make sure the rollout of the 2003 Cobra was a success. So there was no Cobra in 2000 or 2002. All Cobra's after 1998 came with the IRS. 2001 had beefed up half shafts I believe. Obviously the 2003 does as well. |
