Properly setup NO will not harm your engine. Sure it places more stress on everything, especially the bottom end, but as long as it's tuned properly you'll have no problems. There are many different companies out there, I'd stay with a name brand like NOS or NitrousExpress. Just remember go lean and say bye bye to your motor. A 100 shot is a good starting point. Anymore and the pistons might suffer, although some guys are running 150 or more with the hypereutectic pistons. Be careful and you'll have no problems.
