You may have been able to take off just a little quicker than normal and still beat him.
 But then he would have thought you were really racing and he almost beat you. Tough call. Or you could hang on to the pop with your right hand and just run him up to the end of first and then let off. Next time you should make your wife go along so she can hold the drink and you won't have to worry about it at all.
