Either, depending on how fast you're going. I can be at a stop, put my car in second gear, drop the clutch and leave a hundred foot drag mark, pulling it through third. I can also be going around 15 mph and stomp the gas and the rear end goes which ever way the pavement is sloped (as long as I don't oversteer).

I don't konw what that has to do w/ traction, though. When I had my stock rear end in, I could never spin the tires like I do now...so, back to the original question--how does a steeper gear = more traction if all you do is punch the gas and the tires spin.

And before you come back w/ a smart-*ss remark for that, make sure you read the first two threads again. Miami said "WELL...I GOT MY 4.10'S IN AND I HAVE NO GRIP WHATSOEVER!!!" Now, ask him if his tires spun as much before he swapped his rear-end...
