289 HiPo is characterized externally by:

VIN # stamp on block near pan, usually right rear edge where block/pan meet.

Heads with casting numbers 19, 20, 21.

Aluminum water pump (open impeller type, no steel backing plate).

Swept free-flowing exhaust manifolds looking more like headers.

Large alternator pulley

Larger harmonic balancer

Holley 4v carb (instead of Autolite).

Engine dress up kit

Engine/Car is more valuable when VIN's match.

Solid lifters (when engine is running there's unmistakable engine valve clatter)
