My older 8 cylinder engines had a solenoid on the carb right at the idle adjustment cam. This solenoid allows the carb butterfly to close completely at ignition shut-off. If it isn't working properly, the butterfly stays open a smidgen and allows the engine to diesel.
It has one wire running to it. Check and see if the 6 has one. If so, confirm it works , then adjust it as per the manual.
