He may be referring to the positive stop screws that prevent you from 'overshifting' the gears, if you will. If he's got the stop screws set out too far then the gears will not fully engage and is obviously not good for the tranny. A common issue with aftermarket shifters on Tremec 3550's per the guys at TTC.

Does this sound like what he's talking about?
