I thought about the DMV too, but here in Texas the regs that govern street legality are covered by the Dept of Public Safety. I went to the Texas DPS web site and found out what I needed to know. The rules on engine swaps were kinda surprising (emmissions mostly).
It's amazing how stupid some people who should know these things are. I asked the guy who was doing the safety inspection on my car one time what kind of mods I could make and be street legal (I was interested in some weekend racing) and he basically went off on me and told me that you can't drive a race car on the street. How in the world could this guy be qualified to make the inspection if he did not know the laws governing street legality? I pretty much wound up in an argument with the guy and had to tell him how pitiful it was that he was allowed to keep his job. I've never been back to that place again. Good luck. Doc.
