I would say you're EXTREMELY lucky.

I have heard of Ford working on the latest PCM software\firmware. They say it will be able to track not only codes but mph and rpm figures for several hundred miles...

Take it in, they hook up the computer and see 7000 rpm, and the "red alert" light is going to go off.

Glad you got it fixed. But in my opinion, folks shouldn't mod a car if they can't afford to bail themselves out if something goes BOOM!
