In short, what happens is the Mobil 1 cleans away deposits that have built up over the years, and creates clearance issues throughout the engine, including the seals. An engine that was well taken care of, and had it's oil regularly changed, is less likely to develop such deposits, and would handle the change to synthetic much better.
