Mustangs plus has a listing of codes in the back of there catalog. I know you can get the letter code if look on the valve side of the heads. This will only work if the heads are off of the engine. It will be a single letter.

Code F - 1968 - 1973, 302's with 2V carb
Code G - 1969, 1970, boss 302 4V carb
Code J - 1968 4V carb

Hope this helps. I know it's general but you can always wait for some to post something else or you can buy a Ford code ID book.
